Why Triathlon?

People sometimes ask me what makes me want to do triathlons. I think it's a combination fo things.  First and foremost, it's very important to me to be fit.  I've seen and felt the benefits of regular exercise enough times in my life to know that it needs to be a priority, no matter how busy I get. Signing up for races gives me a great motivation to get up and exercise! The knowledge that I will have to survive a race whether I'm in good shape or bad really helps me overcome excuses (too busy, too tired, don't feel like it) and get on with my workouts. Second, I want to have at least a reasonable level of fitness in my entire body. Triathlon gives me a way to train my upper body, lower body, and cardiovascular capacity. Many other sports or activities that I might consider don't offer that benefit, but rather focus on one or two areas. Finally, I enjoy all three disciplines in triathlon. In particular, I think the open-water swims are a really unique challenge.
